Mazda MX-30 EV is “killed” in the US: Price and equipment are good but there are fatal disadvantages

Mazda MX-30 – The Japanese brand’s first electric car in the new era – has officially announced its withdrawal from the North American market after only two years of appearing. This car line was introduced at the Tokyo exhibition in 2019 and began production in mid-2020, then in 2021, it officially joined the game in the North American market. The Mazda MX-30 was initially introduced for limited sales in Canada and California, but plans to expand sales were canceled due to insignificant sales.

According to Mazda, the company has decided to focus on its hybrid vehicle lineup, including the CX-50 Hybrid, CX-90 PHEV and CX-70 PHEV. This made the Mazda MX-30 no longer suitable for the company’s strategy, and sales in the North American market did not meet initial expectations, leading to the decision to withdraw.

For example, in June 2023, Mazda MX-30 sold only 16 cars in North America and total sales in 2023 only reached 66 cars. For the whole year of 2022, the total number of Mazda MX-30 cars sold in this area is only 324 units.

After withdrawing from North America, the Mazda MX-30 will continue to be sold in Japan and some European markets such as the UK.

Although the Mazda MX-30 has a quite attractive price in the North American market, starting at 34,110 USD (equivalent to 808.2 million VND), and the interior and exterior design is highly appreciated, there is an important issue. hindered the car’s potential – the battery capacity was too small at only 35.5 kWh, limiting the range to only about 160 km. Mazda tried to solve this problem by equipping a rotary engine to increase the range to a maximum of 600 km, however, this turned the car into a hybrid car instead of a pure electric car. . However, this happened too late, and this change could have changed the situation if it had been made from the beginning.

The weak powertrain is another issue that makes consumers more optimistic when deciding to buy a Mazda MX-30. With a capacity of only 143 horsepower and 271 Nm of torque, the car’s performance is not really strong enough to compete in this segment. These weaknesses have completely obscured the design and equipment advantages of this Japanese SUV line, playing an important role in Mazda’s decision to withdraw from the North American market.
